"Indigo Campaign Against Homelessness"
France. April, 2007. "This past winter, in an effort to meet the growing problem of homelessness throughout France, a grassroots movement was initiated among "regular folks" (much to the embarrassment of the French Government), to help people who were without living arrangements during the coldest times of the year.
It all happened on the banks of the Canal St. Martin, in Paris, beginning mid-December, 2006, and moving through till Spring. Small red pup-tents were set up along the river, and France's homeless were encouraged to come and move in, so they can be protected from the cold. The process was first initiated by a single individual Abbè Pierre, who approached an organization called Medecins sans Frontiers for a donation of the tents to meet this tremendous problem. Though the Abbè died recently, his idea has taken on a new life all its own.
Before long, young people all over France (led originally by an 11 year old, and nurtured through the efforts of Jean-Baptiste and Augustin Legrand) began to develop their own form of outreach, using the red tents as a theme. Tent Cities sprang up in many locations (see slide show above). The young people then organized under the name "Les Enfants de Don Quichotte" (Children of Don Quixote) and continued the work. Regular citizens were invited to come and stay in the tents, and talk personally with the homeless---many of whom turned out to be fascinating and intelligent people. Compassion bloomed. Efforts were then made to help those who received provisions (food and basic necessities).....to fill out forms so they could continue to receive government assistance after the winter campaign concluded.
Some of this, I am told by watchers in Paris.........especially the parts generated by certain adults......carries a subtle undertone of "hype" and political manipulation. After all, elections in France are only a few months away. But that which is being offered by the kids has a purity to it, a ring of joy and philanthropy.
Could it be that our next generations have finally grown tired of waiting for the older folks to respond to such obvious needs? I hope so. Their patron, Don Quixote, was well-known for "tilting at windmills." But he was also known to take "Impossible Dreams" and sing them into existence, wasn't he? May these "enfants" do likewise in his honor.
