The reason Gay Marriage is so much in the forefront of today's news is..... it draws society headlong into two of its most powerful controversies: government regulation of a citizen's private life, and religious freedom.
Most people forget that "religious freedom," by definition, must also include freedom FROM religion. The right we Americans cherish to worship as we please is not whole and complete unless it also includes the right NOT to worship at all.
In saying this, I'm not implying that homosexuals are anti-religion---even though many religions are "anti" them. Nor am I implying that a family founded on same-sex attraction automatically produces a Godless home. It does not. Basically, I'm trying to remind all well-meaning religious zealots that there is a place to share our love of God and our fervor for spiritual knowledge and belief. Government is NOT that place.
The principal role of Government in today's world is efficient direction of traffic. We are OMNIBUS in our beliefs and OMNIBUS in our needs. As we dance past each other in everyday life, our first goal must be to find a "rhythm" which prevents us from stepping on each others' toes. That, in itself, is a huge task. Alchemists of Old adhered to a simple, yet effective societal rule: "Harm no one, do as thou wilt."
People who attempt to dominate the definition of what's "normal" or "moral" in any society are (most often) waging a war on their own internal shadow. The arguments may sound theological or rational, but their underlying motives are all-too-often emotional. In other words, some folks can't STAND the idea that someone is doing something they would not feel free to do (even if they wanted to).
In America, there are Judeo-Christian Believers who regularly cite Bible Passages condemning the "sin" of homosexuality. Most of the passages mentioned are from the Old Testament (Mosaic Law). Since the New Testament places GRACE at the center of its teachings (not adherence to Law)---the emphasis (overall) naturally shifts to LOVE as the dominant factor for the administration of human relations.
What YOU believe the Bible says is meant to affect what YOU DO with your life. You can say "one man, one woman" for yourself any day. And if you want to gather together with others who believe in that way of life, that's okay, too. But everything has to be a matter of choice or the Law of Love ceases to be in effect. THIS is where Religion and Government have gotten off track.
And just to be clear.....being homophobic is NOT evil, either. It's just another "preference"......another attribute of being human. To be MILITANTLY homophobic can lead to trouble......just as being MILITANTLY homosexual can lead to trouble also.
As the energies of Planet Earth continue to heat up, ALL humanity is on edge---desperately trying to balance our insides with our outsides. We ALL need loads and loads of understanding---as well as plenty of TLC during these fateful days. Debate on this topic will undoubtedly increase. Let's just hope that an increase of LOVE grows right along with them!
